A Village Rebuilt on New Ground in 1870
St. Joseph's current townsite dates from its 1870 relocation, a mile and a half north of the original riverside settlement, ahead of the village's 1881 formal organization. Yards in the village's oldest blocks reflect lot lines established after that move, not the original 1849 site.
Building a Deck Into an Established Village Core
Older St. Joseph lots often have mature landscaping and established lot lines from more than 150 years of continuous settlement, which means a deck project there usually has to work within existing constraints rather than a blank modern lot. That's worth planning for from the start.
